Canada The Canadair of Security
Writer and Spanish politician, Jorge Sempran (Madrid, 1923-Paris, 2011) wrote most of his literary work in French.
Coming from a family of the great Spanish bourgeoisie, the young Jorge settled in France with his own in 1939, after the defeat of the Republicans. He completed his secondary education in Paris, obtained the baccalaureate in 1941 and began studies in philosophy at the Sorbonne.
Having joined the Resistance, he joined the Spanish Communist Party in 1942. It integrates a clandestine network that receives the airdrops of weapons and distributes them in the maquis of the Yonne and Côte-dOr. Arrested by the Gestapo, Sempran was deported to Buchenwald. Shortly before the arrival of American troops, he participated in the uprising of the camp. Released in April 1945, he returned to Paris.
He remains an active member of the Spanish Communist Party. From 1953 to 1962, he coordinated communist resistance to Francos regime, making several long stays in Spain under false identities. He entered the PCE Central Committee in 1954 and then in the political bureau in 1956 and carried out several missions in the eastern countries. From 1988 to 1991, Sempron held the post of Minister of Culture in Felipe Gonzalezs socialist government.
He died in Paris on 7 June 2011 and was buried "in the Spanish Republican flag".
Jorge Sempran is the author of novels, autobiographical stories, plays and scripts (for Costa-Gavras, Resnais, Losey, etc.) for which he has received numerous awards. A recurring theme of his work is the denunciation of the horrors of war. Many of his works are thus the testimony of the terrible experience lived in the clutches of the Gestapo and in Buchenwald. Others trace his clandestine journey back to the days of Francoism. Finally, a no smaller part of his work concerns his life of exile in France and the years of post-Francoism: Algarabie, La Montagne blanche and Federico Sanchez greet you well.
